Set up welcome messages
Have the bot greet new members of your Discord in a channel, by DM, or both.
Welcome messages greet people who join your Discord server. Officers can view the settings. Only admins can change them.
Before you start
- The bot must be installed in your Discord.
- Open the Welcome page: /g/your-guild/bot-welcome, where “your-guild” is your guild’s address. In the guild sidebar it is under Bot.
- Welcomes are not instant. The bot checks the member list every few minutes, so a greeting arrives within about five minutes of joining.
Turn on welcomes
- Tick Welcome new members.
- Under Where, choose one:
- Post in a channel
- DM the newcomer
- Both
- If the welcome posts in a channel, pick it under Channel.
- Write the Channel message, the DM message, or both. Only the boxes for your chosen mode are shown. Each holds up to 500 characters.
- Check the Preview.
- Select Save.
Placeholders
| You type | The newcomer sees |
|---|---|
{user} | A mention of the new member |
{guild} | Your guild’s name |
Type them in lower case, exactly as shown.
If you leave Channel message empty, the bot sends the message shown as its placeholder: Welcome to {guild}, {user}!. If you leave DM message empty, the DM uses the channel message.
What happens next
- Turning this on never greets people already in your Discord. The first check only records who is there. Members who join after that are welcomed.
- Bots that join are not welcomed.
- Each member is welcomed once.
- Recent welcomes lists the last 12 greetings and failures.
Limits and gotchas
- You cannot save an enabled welcome in Post in a channel or Both mode without a channel.
- The bot welcomes up to 20 new members per check. A bigger burst is finished by the following checks.
- The bot reads the first 1,000 members of a server. In a larger Discord, some joins may not be noticed.
- A member who has DMs closed will not receive the DM. In Both mode the channel post still goes out.
- Quiet hours and the daily cap on the Automations page do not apply to welcomes.
- If saving shows a warning that Discord refused the member list, welcomes cannot be sent in your server yet. Your settings are still saved. See Get help.
